NEW CD RELEASE

"THE GRAPE VINE TWIST"

“The second CD by Tim Twiss of tunes from early banjo instruction books is a real treat.  Since I began fooling with this music over thirty years ago, a growing number of younger players have taken it up with enthusiasm.  Tim is one of the most accomplished of these players, with a particular affinity for pieces with interesting rhythms.  Although this is definitely a banjo recording, a diversity of sound is achieved through different levels of accompaniment: unaccompanied, accompanied by bones or tambourine or both, and a fuller ensemble sound with two banjos plus bones and tambourine (all played by Tim).  The tunes themselves range from simple and straightforward (“The Power of Music”), through highly syncopated short tunes (“Fireman’s Jig”), to wonderfully complex ensemble tunes (“Narragansett Jig,” one of the highlights of the CD).  Sometimes it is hard to know what to make of printed notes on the pages of old music, but Tim brings them to life in a very engaging way.”
